Polyurethane
Varnishes
Polyurethane
provides the toughest finish available with excellent corrosion,
chemical, scratch and wear resistance. Use indoors or outdoors to
provide maximum, long-term protection. Varnish dries clear and is
non-yellowing. Jo Sonja's Acrylic Polyurethane Varnishes are available
in three different sheens: Gloss, Satin and Matte.
Directions
- A coat of Clear Glaze Medium is recommended over a newly painted
piece to seal the surface for ease in varnish application.
- Gently shake before use.
- Jo Sonja's Gloss Varnish may separate or "crawl" if first coat
is
applied
too heavily. If this occurs, continue brushing with a criss-cross
motion until varnish adheres. Varnish can be thinned slightly
with Flow Medium.
- Apply with a large soft bristle brush, working on small manageable
areas. Apply a very thin film of varnish using a criss cross motion,
then smoothing the strokes in the direction of the wood grain.
You can over-brush, touch up and rework the varnish until it dries.
- Allow at least 1 hour before application of second coat. If
previous coat has dried more than 24 hours, light sanding will
ensure adhesion of additional varnish layers.
- For best results varnish in a cool, draft free area.
- For an alcohol resistant finish, apply 4-5 coats of varnish
and allow to cure before use.
- Maximum durability is reached after 2 weeks cure time under
normal conditions.
- DO NOT use over oil based products or antiquing finishes

Both
Matte and Gloss Polyurethane Varnishes were used to empasize
the painting on this plate. The Matte complements the soft
rim and the Gloss highlights the Madonna & Child. Artist Journal
