Directions
for Crackle Medium Backgrounds
- Use One
Step Basecoating method by mixing All Purpose Sealer with desired
Jo Sonja's® Artists' or Background Colors 1:1. Sand if necessary.
Apply an uncured layer of base color WITHOUT the addition of All
Purpose Sealer. The fresher the and thicker the
application of paint, the deeper the crackle pattern will be.
DO NOT USE BLOW DRYER! This will cure the paint and prevent Crackle
Medium from working properly.
- Allow basecoat
to dry to the touch.
- Using a
large soft bristle brush, apply a coat of Crackle Medium using
brush similar to a palette knife. Load brush, lay medium onto
the surface as if spreading frosting. Slip slap slightly to "blend
out" the brush strokes. Crackle pattern will follow the direction
of brush strokes. DO NOT go back into the medium once it has begun
to dry. A thicker application of medium will result in a larger
crackle pattern. A thinner application will provide fine, wispy
crackles. The Crackle Medium will dry clear and level out slightly.
- Crackle
Medium is best when allowed to dry naturally. Do not touch during
the drying process.
- When Crackle
Medium is completely dry, surface will be slick. Sanding will
decrease the slickness and smooth the surface. Gently sand using
#400 - #600 sandpaper until desired smoothness is attained.
- Antiquing
may be applied to accentuate the crackle pattern. Thin desired
color with Retarder and brush into cracks. Allow to dry. Remove
excess color with a soft cloth moistened with Retarder or water.
- Design can
be painted over the crackled background. Allow to dry completely
before varnishing.
**NOTE: As
a surface only crackle, the resulting pattern will be very fine.
You MUST antique the surface to accentuate the crackle pattern Clean
up with mild soap and cool water.
